There is something incredibly special about summer engagement photos at Skylands Manor. Between the winding garden paths, castle-like stone architecture, open rolling fields, and dreamy golden light, it truly feels like stepping into another world for an evening. Deanna and John’s engagement session at New Jersey Botanical Garden was exactly that — romantic, relaxed, joyful, and full of laughter from beginning to end.
We had the most perfect sunshine-filled summer evening together wandering through the grounds, getting to know one another better before their wedding day later this year at The Barn at Villa Venezia. One of my favorite parts of engagement sessions is seeing couples settle into simply being together. The nerves disappear, the laughs become natural, and suddenly the photos start feeling less like “taking pictures” and more like documenting a season of life you never want to forget.
That is exactly what this session felt like with Deanna and John.
Summer evenings at Skylands Manor are honestly hard to beat for engagement photography in North New Jersey. The gardens are overflowing with color, the light stays soft and golden late into the evening, and every corner of the property feels completely different from the last.
One minute, it feels like you are walking through a European castle garden. The next, you are standing in a wide open field with glowing sunset light surrounding you. Then you turn a corner and find sculpted stone staircases, ivy-covered walls, fountains, and hidden pathways tucked into the gardens.
It is one of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions here so much. The variety allows couples to have multiple looks and completely different vibes throughout one session without ever needing to leave the property.
For Deanna and John, the grounds fit them perfectly. They wanted photos that felt timeless and romantic while still feeling like them — comfortable, natural, and full of connection rather than stiff posing. We spent the evening exploring the gardens, laughing through candid moments, and creating a beautiful mix of modern and traditional engagement photographs they will be able to treasure for decades.

One thing I loved so much about Deanna and John’s session was that they intentionally chose two outfits for their engagement photos. Not just for save the dates or their wedding website, but because they truly wanted to document this chapter of life together exactly as it is right now.
Before marriage.
Before children.
Before the busy years ahead.
Before growing older together through all the seasons life will bring.
That matters.
Engagement sessions are about so much more than checking something off a wedding to-do list. These photographs become part of your home, your family history, and eventually your children’s memories of who you were together when your story was just beginning.
Years from now, these photos will remind Deanna and John of summer evenings spent laughing together before their wedding day even arrived. They will remember the excitement, the anticipation, and the way this season of life felt before everything changed in the best possible way.
There is something really beautiful about slowing down long enough to preserve that.

One of the most common questions couples ask before their engagement session is what they should wear. Choosing outfits for your engagement photos can feel overwhelming at first, but my biggest advice is always this:
Wear something that still feels like you.
It is important to see yourselves in your photos. Try not to choose clothing that you would never normally wear or styles that make you feel uncomfortable just because they look trendy online.
The best engagement photos happen when couples feel confident, comfortable, and relaxed.
For engagement sessions, especially at locations like Skylands Manor or New Jersey Botanical Garden, I usually recommend bringing two outfits:

Think something relaxed and comfortable that allows movement and personality to shine through. This could be:
These photos often end up feeling playful, candid, and very “real life.”
This is where Skylands truly shines. The stone buildings, gardens, staircases, and dramatic architecture create the perfect backdrop for a slightly elevated look.
Long dresses, heels, suit jackets, fitted neutrals, or elegant silhouettes photograph beautifully against the romantic estate feel of the property.
The combination of both casual and formal photos gives your gallery variety while still telling a complete story of who you are together.

One of the biggest things couples tell me after their session is how surprised they are by how easy and comfortable everything felt.
That is always my goal.
Your engagement session should not feel stiff, awkward, overly posed, or stressful. It should feel like spending intentional time together while I gently guide you into natural movement and moments that photograph beautifully.
For Deanna and John, the evening felt more like wandering the gardens together on a summer date night than standing through a formal photoshoot. We talked, laughed, explored different areas of the grounds, and let the evening unfold naturally.
That relaxed environment is what creates genuine smiles, connection, and photographs that actually feel like you.
Every engagement session I photograph is customized around each couple’s personalities, comfort level, and style. Some couples are playful and adventurous. Others are quiet and romantic. Some want dramatic editorial-inspired portraits while others want cozy candid moments. Most couples want a healthy mix of all of it.
There is no “one size fits all” approach.
