Cape May Family Photographer | Sunset Photos at the Beach
There’s a reason Cape May shows up on so many New Jersey families’ summer calendars year after year. The gingerbread houses, the beach tags, the ice cream walk after dinner, for a lot of NJ families, a week in Cape May isn’t just a vacation. It’s a rite of passage, passed down from one generation to the next. If you grew up going, there’s a good chance your kids are growing up going too.
That’s exactly what brought the Courter family and me together for a sunset session on the beach at Cape May Lighthouse State Park this summer.

Meet the Courters: A Cape May Sunset Session at the Lighthouse Beach
The Courters have been coming to Cape May and Wildwood NJ for years, and this session was really about continuing that tradition, watching it live on in their kids the same way it was in their own childhood. We met at Cape May Lighthouse State Park for golden hour, with the lighthouse rising up behind the dunes and the whole beach glowing gold as the sun dropped.
What I love about this stretch of beach is that it gives you everything people picture when they think “Cape May” the dunes, the wide open sand, that unmistakable lighthouse silhouette, without the packed sunset crowds at Sunset Beach. It’s easy to get to, there’s plenty of parking, and the view is honestly one of the best sunset backdrops on the entire Jersey Shore. We spent the evening walking the tideline, letting the kids run through the sand, and just being a family, while I captured it as it happened. We even saw a pod of Dolphins playing in the waves.

Why Cape May Is the Quintessential NJ Shore Family Vacation
Cape May has a different feel than the rest of the Jersey Shore. It’s the Victorian architecture, the walkability, the slower pace — it’s a town built for family vacations, not just beach days. For a lot of New Jersey families, a week in Cape May is a childhood tradition that gets handed down: the same beach, the same ice cream stop, the same porch, year after year, generation after generation.
That’s what makes it such a meaningful place to document your family, too. A Cape May family photo session isn’t just a portrait — it’s a record of the tradition itself. Years from now, those photos won’t just show what your kids looked like that summer. They’ll show the vacation, the place, the feeling of it.

Why Book Your Session at the Lighthouse Beach
Cape May Lighthouse State Park is one of my favorite spots in town for family sessions, for a few reasons:
- Easy to get to — straightforward parking and access, so you’re not hauling kids and gear across town before the session even starts
- Beautiful, natural scenery — the dunes and untouched beach with the lighthouse is a stunner.
- Incredible sunset light — the lighthouse gives you an unmistakable Cape May backdrop, and the open beach means the light has nowhere to hide
- Without the crowds — you get all of the classic Cape May sunset beauty without fighting for space at the more popular sunset-watching spots along the bay and at Cape May’s most popular Sunset Beach.

What a Cape May Session Actually Looks Like
Every family is different, but most of my Cape May sessions follow a similar rhythm:
- Golden hour timing — we shoot in the hour before sunset, when the light turns soft and warm and the beach starts to empty out
- Real interaction over posed smiles — walking the tideline, running in the sand, piggyback rides, the kids being kids — these are usually the frames families love most
- A mix of full family and individual portraits — so everyone walks away with images that are just theirs, alongside the group shot worthy of printing large
- Working with your vacation, not against it — we can meet at the lighthouse beach, your rental, or another favorite Cape May spot, whatever fits your week

Common Questions About Cape May Family Photography
How far in advance should we book? As early as you can, ideally in the winter or early spring for a summer week. Cape May sessions — especially sunset slots at the lighthouse beach — fill up fast once the season gets close. I am in the area multiple times during the summer months June through August.
What if we’re only in town for a few days? That’s usually plenty. Tell me your dates as soon as you have them and we’ll find an evening that works.
Do we have to use the lighthouse beach? Not at all. It’s one of my favorites for the scenery and the lighter crowds, but I’m happy to meet you at your rental, a favorite downtown spot, or wherever your family’s Cape May tradition already lives.
What should we wear? Keep it simple and cohesive rather than matchy-matchy — soft blues, whites, and neutrals photograph beautifully against the dunes and evening light. (If you’re planning a fall session too, I’ve got a full guide on what to wear for family photos.)
Do you only shoot at sunset? Sunset is my favorite for that golden, glowing light, but sunrise sessions at the lighthouse beach are just as beautiful — and even quieter.

Let’s Continue Your Family’s Cape May Tradition
If Cape May is already a part of your family’s story — or you’re just starting to build that tradition with your own kids — I’d love to help you document it. Whether it’s your family’s first summer down the shore or your twentieth, these are the photos you’ll be pulling out decades from now, remembering exactly how the light looked on the dunes that evening.
