NJ Fall Family Photo Locations: Gardens, Parks & At-Home Sessions

Fall in North Jersey is short and it moves fast — one week the leaves are barely turning, and the next they’re on the ground. If you’re planning your family’s fall session, the location you choose sets the whole tone of your gallery. Below are some of my favorite spots, from the well-known showstoppers to a few quieter gems most families haven’t discovered yet — plus a fully at-home option for families who’d rather not leave home at all.

The Showstoppers

Natirar (Peapack-Gladstone, NJ) If you want your fall photos to feel like they belong on the cover of a magazine, Natirar is it. This former royal estate has rolling meadows, stone bridges, a working farm, and forested trails that turn gold and amber by mid-October. It’s one of the most photographed properties in North Jersey for a reason — the scale of the landscape gives images room to breathe, and there’s a location for every mood, from open-field golden hour to intimate woodland light.

Cross Estate Gardens (Bernardsville, NJ) Tucked inside Morristown National Historical Park, Cross Estate Gardens is a favorite for families who want something romantic and a little secret-garden. Stone walls, a wisteria-draped pergola, perennial borders, and a rustic barn backdrop make this spot feel intimate rather than grand — beautiful for smaller families or sessions with young kids who need a contained, safe space to explore while we shoot.

Verona Park (Verona, NJ) Verona Park is a longtime favorite for a reason — the lake, the arched stone bridge, and the tree-lined paths turn into a wall of red and gold every October. It’s an easy, accessible spot for families coming from Essex and Union County towns like Montclair, Millburn, and West Orange, and it photographs beautifully without needing a long drive.

The Quieter Gems (Fewer Crowds, Just as Beautiful)

Frelinghuysen Arboretum (Morristown, NJ) A 127-acre property with formal gardens, open lawns, and mature trees that put on a serious fall show. Because it’s a working arboretum rather than a public park, it tends to be far less crowded than the more popular spots — which means more privacy and cleaner backgrounds in your images.

Willowwood Arboretum (Chester, NJ) One of the best-kept secrets in Morris County. Willowwood has meadows, a pond, and specimen trees collected over more than a century, and on a weekday afternoon you can often have an entire field to yourselves. If you want a fall session that feels unhurried and undiscovered, this is where I send families who’ve “done” the popular spots already.

Leonard J. Buck Garden (Far Hills, NJ) A woodland garden built into a natural gorge, with streams, stone outcroppings, and layered plantings. It’s a slower, more textured kind of beautiful — less about wide-open fall color and more about intimate, storybook detail. Best for families who want something artistic and a little unexpected.

Van Vleck House & Gardens (Montclair, NJ) A hidden garden estate in the middle of Montclair, with formal boxwood hedges, a rose garden, and specimen trees. It’s a wonderful option for families closer to Essex County who want an elevated, manicured feel without the drive out to Somerset or Morris County.

Central Park of Morris County (Morris Plains, NJ) Don’t let the name fool you — this isn’t Manhattan’s Central Park, it’s a wide, easy, beautifully landscaped county park with open lawns, ponds, and mature tree cover that turns brilliant color in fall. It’s a great option for families who want a low-key, close-to-home location with plenty of variety in one place.

Skylands Manor & NJ Botanical Garden (Ringwood, NJ) Worth a mention for families willing to drive a little further north — formal gardens, a stone manor house, and dramatic mountain backdrops that read as almost European. A stunning, less-crowded alternative to the more heavily trafficked fall destinations.

Or Skip the Drive Entirely: At-Home Sessions

Not every family wants to pack up kids, coordinate a drive, and hope for good behavior in a public park. For families who’d rather keep things simple — or who have a backyard, garden, or home that’s already beautiful — I offer a fully at-home session.

I come to you. Your backyard, your porch, your living room, your kitchen table on a Sunday morning. There’s no location to scout, no travel time, no crowds to work around, and no pressure to “perform” in public. Just your family, in the place you actually live, photographed the way it really feels — golden light through your own windows, kids running through your own yard, the dog on your own couch.

This is a favorite option for families in estate-style homes with mature trees and established landscaping — the setting is already there. It’s also ideal for families with a new baby, a reluctant toddler, or simply a preference for privacy over a public park on a busy fall Saturday. Styling guidance, session flow, and everything else is handled exactly the same way as an on-location session — the only difference is you never have to leave home.
