The best light possible.

When I arrive for your at home newborn photoshoot, the number one thing I’m looking for is a big window to provide me with ample natural light to do the majority of your photographs in. Then I consider the room and background. I usually find that if you have a darker home we will be in an upstairs bedroom, the master and the nursery are great spots. Though I will also use the living room, dining room or even a staircase and the kitchen if that’s where the light is the most beautiful.

If your home is on the darker side, no worries! i can achieve my bright and light photo style in most rooms, no matter the situation by using a small flash. It’s unobtrusive, and most times you don’t even notice it while you’re busy admiring your sweet little baby.

Baby solo.

Wraps and swaddles are used to keep your baby happy comfortable and sleepy. If baby is upset or squirmy, the wrap helps to calm and settle baby into a deep sleep. If your baby is sleepy, expect for little hands and feet to peek out!

Baby with a sibling during your at home newborn photoshoot

Set your expectations to the age and personality of your toddler or older child.

Please know that I ALWAYS will keep baby’s safety at the top of my priority list. If your older child is being a little wild and crazy, or can’t quite handle being near baby on their own, I will focus on you holding baby and having the sibling interact with baby in the safety of your arms.

The easiest way to get older siblings with their new baby sibling is on the bed. Baby will be laid safely on the bed, while big brother or sister come and lay on their belly behind baby, or peek over. This is great because the older child doesn’t experience any pressure to hold baby on their own. They can view baby on their own terms…. and sometimes treats help. Peep the m&m on baby girls head in the below photo. #tricksofthetrade … I photoshop it out later and no one ever knows!

Another great way to get siblings together is lying on their back and holding baby in their arm. This is a great one for calm and cooperative big siblings. Typically the three and over crowd can do this one with a bit of encouragement. The trick is to be quick, they won’t want to stay here for long!

If all else fails, and big brother or sister just aren’t having it, a little too rambuncious to be safe, or a little shy, then we can think a bit out of the box with poses like dad holding him/her over baby for kisses. We do what we can! I will never force anything to happen that your child does not want. The last thing I’d ever want is for your child to fear having photos! They should be fun!

Baby with the family pet.

Similarly to with a big sibling, I keep baby’s safety first!

You can expect images that have the family pet in them but not necessarily touching baby in any way.

Dog noses in the crib, lying at your feet, on the bed together, all snuggled up on the couch.
