New Jersey Shore Family Photography | Long Beach Island, Cape May & Beyond

Every summer, I trade North Jersey for sand between my toes. For a few precious weeks each year, I pack up my cameras and head down to the Jersey Shore to photograph the families, growing bellies, and newly engaged couples who spend their summers where I love to be most — Long Beach Island and Cape May, with stops at Sandy Hook, Sea Bright, Spring Lake, Avalon, and more.
If you’re searching for a NJ Shore family photographer, a Jersey Shore maternity photographer, or someone to capture your Jersey Shore engagement photos this year (or next), this post is your guide to how these sessions work, where I’ll be, and how to plan ahead so your family doesn’t miss the window.

Why Book a Family Session at the Jersey Shore?
There’s something different about photos taken at the beach. It’s not just the scenery — it’s the mood. Kids run instead of pose. Grandparents relax instead of rush. Everyone is a little sunkissed, a little windblown, and a lot more themselves. A beach session isn’t about lining everyone up and saying “cheese.” It’s about spending a morning or evening doing what your family already loves to do together — and letting me document it as it happens.
Meet a Family I’ve Photographed for 10 Years at Beach Haven, LBI
The photos alongside this post are from one of my longest-standing clients — a family of six with a summer house right in Beach Haven, Long Beach Island, my absolute favorite stretch of the LBI coastline. I’ve photographed this family every single year for a decade, watching their kids grow from toddlers into teenagers, right on the same stretch of sand they return to summer after summer.
Each session looks a little different depending on the year, but it always includes the same heart: playing in the waves, collecting shells along the tideline, throwing a football on the beach, building a sandcastle, and simply being together while I chase the light, the seagulls, and the memories around them. We’re already planning their next session for June through August of 2027 — proof that the best beach sessions are the ones planned well in advance.

Where I’ll Be This Summer (and How to Book)
I only spend a limited number of weeks at the shore each season, so I always recommend reaching out early — ideally the winter or spring before — to lock in your dates. My favorite home bases are:
- Long Beach Island (LBI) — especially Beach Haven, Surf City, and Ship Bottom
- Cape May — including sessions near the historic Cape May Lighthouse
- Sandy Hook — with the Sandy Hook Lighthouse as a favorite backdrop
- Barnegat Light — sunrise sessions at the Barnegat Lighthouse are some of my favorites of the whole summer
- Sea Bright
- Spring Lake
- Avalon
I typically release my exact shore dates each spring for the upcoming summer, so if there’s a specific beach town, lighthouse, or week you’re hoping to catch me in, reach out and I’ll do my best to build it into the schedule. If you already know your family will be down the shore during a certain week, tell me — I’ll let you know if I’m already planning to be nearby, or see what I can work out to meet you there.

What a Jersey Shore Session Actually Looks Like
Every family, couple, and growing belly is different, but most shore sessions follow a similar rhythm:
- Golden hour timing — we shoot early morning or right before sunset, when the light is soft, the crowds are thinner, and the beach feels like it’s just yours
- Your rental, your beach access, or a favorite public spot — I can meet you right at your rental’s private beach access, your family’s summer home, or a favorite public beach or lighthouse
- Real interaction over posed smiles — running toward the water, throwing a football, building a sandcastle, collecting shells, piggyback rides, the dog getting sandy — these unscripted moments are usually everyone’s favorites
- A mix of full group and individual portraits — so every family unit, couple, or expecting mama walks away with images that are just theirs, alongside the group shots worthy of printing large

Common Questions About Jersey Shore Family Photography
How far in advance should I book? As early as possible — ideally in the winter or early spring for a summer session. Prime sunrise and sunset time slots at popular spots like Beach Haven, Cape May, and Barnegat Light fill quickly, and since I’m only at the shore for a limited window each year, dates go fast.
What if we’re only at the shore for one specific week? Let me know your dates as soon as you have them. I plan my shore schedule around client requests, so the more notice I have, the better chance I can build your week into my trip.
Do you only photograph families? Not at all — I photograph families, maternity sessions, extended family reunions, engagements, and weddings all along the Jersey Shore each summer.
Can we do the session at our own beach house instead of a public beach? Absolutely. Some of my favorite sessions happen right at a family’s private beach access or backyard deck, especially when that home holds years of summer memories already.
What should we wear? Keep it simple, comfortable, and cohesive rather than matchy-matchy. Soft blues, whites, and neutral tones tend to photograph beautifully against sand and water. (If you’re planning a fall or holiday session too, I have a full guide on what to wear for family photos.)

Plan Ahead: Let’s Find Your Week at the Shore
If your family already knows you’ll be down the shore next summer — whether it’s a week in Beach Haven, a weekend in Cape May, or an afternoon at Sandy Hook — now is the time to reach out. Tell me the weeks you’ll be in town, and I’ll let you know if I’ll already be nearby or if we can plan a date that works for both of us.
Whether it’s your family’s tenth summer together on LBI or your very first trip down the shore as a family of three, I’d love to help you document it. Reach out today to start planning your custom Jersey Shore session — and let’s spend a morning chasing the light, the seagulls, and the memories together.
