These were purchased from trader joes! I whipped up a chair backer and bed swag to add the perfect amount of prettiness to the session decor. The florals can be more greenery or more floral based

Plan two outfits.

The first portion of every cake smash session is focused on portraits of the birthday child, and any family that’s involved in the shoot. So, a portrait outfit, and a cake smash outfit are absolutely welcome! Though if you choose to have just the cake smash outfit and use it during the portrait time, that’s okay too!

Don’t expect too much smashing to go on.

All babies are different! You’d be surprised when I tell you that first birthday cake smash sessions are very light on the actual cake smashing portion. Babies either dig right in, and are over it within 10 minutes, or they want nothing to do with it and are over it in 10 minutes! I’ve had both sides of the coin, and can tell you that I can get everything cake related that we need or want within those 10 minutes!

It’s a family event, come photo ready!

First birthdays cake smash sessions are not only a celebration for the birthday child, but for the whole family! I always welcome in the whole crew to all of my sessions! Once the birthday child has had a chance to dig into their cake, and I feel we have enough solo shots, I invite the rest of the family and/or siblings in to enjoy the cake!

Plan on getting messy!

With every first birthday cake smash session, I insist on getting more family members involved! Big siblings, parents, even the family pet if we’re at your home or outside! These make for the most adorable and fun family photos celebrating your little one’s first birthday! That said, do plan on getting a bit messy, especially your birthday kiddo. Bring extra wipes, and an “everyday” set of clothing to put on afterwards.
