5 things you should bring to your child’s first birthday cake smash photo shoot in Sparta NJ

Cake Smash sessions are so much fun for everyone involved! It helps to prepare ahead of time! You’ll want to discuss with your photographer beforehand what items they provide versus what you should bring. Here is a list of things you’ll need for a cake smash photo session:

Smash cake – these are smaller than your typical cake and can fit on a small high chair easily. I always provide a white naked cake for a timeless look. Also, we don’t want the smash cakes to be so tall that it blocks your adorable baby’s face. No need to buy the best cake out there – babies won’t mind. Cupcakes and donuts can be fun also!!

Baby outfits– Overalls and boys linen rompers are a favorite for one-year sessions- ones with texture will photograph very well, like THESE OPTIONS from Amazon. Remember, the birthday cake will make quite a mess, so don’t plan on having your child wear anything you don’t mind potentially getting stained.

Spare clothes – I recommend bringing your baby in an everyday outfit and changing into the clothes you want to photograph when you arrive at the session. Either way, ensure you have clean clothes for your baby to go home in.

Props – Again, the photographer may provide some props around a theme. In my studio, I offer a vintage white high chair for all birthdays! I also provide classic wooden toys like blocks trains and stacking toys. You may want to add a cute cake topper, like this boho one from Amazon.

Wipes & towels – Be ready for some messiness on photo shoot day! Depending on how messy your little one gets with their cake! In my studio I am ready with towels on hand! It is helpful for you to have wet wipes that you prefer to clean up their hands and face afterward.
