Spring Family Photo Session at the NJ Botanical Gardens | North NJ Motherhood & Family Photography

FAMILY

post filed in:

I’m not sure there’s a prettier place in all of New Jersey for spring family photo sessions than the New Jersey Botanical Gardens at Skylands. Between the cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, and soft spring light, it’s truly magical—especially for mom and me photos, motherhood sessions, and even multi-generation family portraits.

Jeanette shared that she had always dreamed of having photos taken with her daughters at the gardens, and this spring felt like the perfect time to make it happen. As a bonus, she invited her parents along so we could capture three generations together—mom, daughters, and grandparents. I will always say yes to that idea. These are the kinds of images that become family heirlooms.

We met on a crisp spring morning just as the gardens opened, which is hands-down my favorite time for spring photo sessions in North NJ. Early mornings offer the most peaceful experience, fewer crowds, and the most beautiful light. And trust me—this location is incredibly popular for spring family photos once the cherry blossoms begin to bloom.

The NJ Botanical Gardens at Skylands are endlessly beautiful, which makes them one of the most requested locations for spring sessions with families, children, and mothers. We spent our time walking through the grounds, playing little games, laughing, and letting the girls just be themselves. That combination of movement and connection is what makes spring family photos feel natural, joyful, and timeless.

Why Botanical Gardens Are Perfect for Spring Family Photos in NJ

Botanical gardens create a soft, elegant backdrop that works beautifully for:

  • Motherhood and Mom & Me sessions
  • Spring family photos with young children
  • Grandparents and multi-generation portraits
  • Milestone and heirloom family images

In addition to the NJ Botanical Gardens at Skylands, some other beautiful North NJ garden locations for spring photo sessions include:

  • Reeves-Reed Arboretum
  • Presby Memorial Iris Gardens
  • Laurelwood Arboretum
  • Local town gardens and estates throughout Sussex and Morris County

Each garden blooms slightly differently, which gives us flexibility when planning the perfect session.

Tips for Planning Spring Photos in the Cherry Blossoms

Be flexible with timing and locations
Cherry blossoms in New Jersey never bloom on a fixed schedule. Different trees bloom at different times, and every year is a little different. I always recommend keeping a flexible mindset so we can choose the best location at peak bloom.

Plan for crowds (or avoid them!)
Spring gardens are extremely popular, especially when the cherry blossoms arrive. Early morning sessions and weekdays are ideal if you want a more peaceful experience and fewer people in the background.

Choose soft, neutral colors
Spring florals already bring beautiful pastel tones into your photos. Soft neutrals, light pastels, creams, blush tones, and gentle blues photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than bold patterns.

A Note on Multi-Generation Photos

Including grandparents in your spring family session is one of the most meaningful decisions you can make. These photos tell a bigger story—one your children (and grandchildren) will treasure for years to come. If you’re already planning a spring session, adding grandparents is always encouraged.

Spring family photo sessions in North NJ are about celebrating connection, motherhood, and the season of growth. Whether it’s mom and me photos, a full family session, or three generations together, garden locations offer a timeless, joyful setting for images you’ll love forever.
