Free Things to Do With Kids in Sussex County NJ (Local Mom Guide)

If you’re searching for free things to do with kids in Sussex County NJ, you’re not alone. Whether you’re trying to get out of the house with a toddler, plan a low-key afternoon, or simply keep your kids entertained without spending a fortune, Sussex County is full of hidden gems.

As a mom of two teenagers myself, I’m not far removed from the days of just needing to GET OUT of the house without spending a ton of money every day.

From scenic parks and stroller-friendly trails to library story times, splash pads, and local farms, this guide covers the best free kid-friendly activities in Sussex County NJ, all realistic, easy, and actually enjoyable for moms too! Some fun for the whole day and others just for the afternoon play time between naps.

Best Free Parks in Sussex County NJ for Kids

A good park day is one of the easiest (and most successful) outings with little kids.

Go-to parks for easy outings:

  • Waterloo Village
Historic Buidings, Animals and wildlife, walking paths, and tons of room for kids to run, scooter, or just explore. Great for a no-pressure afternoon, and really pretty and interesting for the adults too!
  • Maple Grange Park
A favorite for younger kids with a solid playground setup and plenty of space to spread out. There is even a concession stand during summer months for a little sweet treat or a hot dog!
  • Station Park
Perfect for combining a quick walk with playground time, ideal for busy mornings or pre-nap outings. Fishing in the pond could be a fun activity for the kindergarten and beyond group!

Mom tip: Keep a “park bag” in your car with snacks, wipes, and a blanket… you’ll use it constantly and it’s so much easier to just always have it with you than to have to pack every time.

Easy Trails & Walks

You don’t need to be a “hiking family” to enjoy Sussex County’s outdoor beauty.

Easy, kid-friendly trails:

  • Paulinskill Valley Trail
Flat, wide, and perfect for strollers, bikes, and little legs that tire quickly.
  • Appalachian National Scenic Trail (Boardwalk Section)
One of the BEST hidden gems for families. The wooden boardwalk lets kids explore nature without mud, steep climbs, or stress. Advisable to older kids as the boardwalk does go over water with no railing!
  • Walkill Wildlife refuge
  • Multiple walking trails and pathways both gravel and flat to grassy and through the woods. Great way to get out and explore with the little ones and big ones alike ( or just adults as my husband and I go for “date walks” here often)
  • High Point State Park
Beautiful views and easy walking paths. Certain areas and times allow free access, making it a great budget-friendly adventure.

Mom tip: Don’t overcomplicate it, even a 20-minute walk counts as a successful outing. We just need to get out not exhaust and overwhelm ourselves.

Free Splash Pads & Water Play Near Sussex County

When summer hits, free water play = sanity saver.

  • Hillside Park Splash Pad
A simple, toddler-friendly splash pad that’s easy to manage.
  • High Point State Park Lake / Lake Wawayanda / Hopatcong state park – All with access to the lake, beach swimming, paddleboarding boating and more! GREAT for a whole day out at the beach and fun in the sun. Pack a picnic and make it a whole day excursion.
  • Firemen’s Memorial Park
Worth the short drive. combine splash time with a playground for a full morning outing.

💡 Mom tip: Go early for smaller crowds and happier kids.

📚 Library Story Times & Free Indoor Activities

If you need something calm, structured, and air-conditioned—this is your go-to.

  • Sussex County Library System
    Offers:
    • Baby + toddler story times
    • Music and movement classes
    • Crafts and seasonal events

These are some of the easiest free weekly activities for kids in Sussex County NJ, and they require almost zero planning on your end!

💡 Mom tip: Pick one consistent library day each week. It becomes part of your rhythm and makes life easier.

Farms Kids Will Love (Free + Low Cost Fun)

One of the BEST parts of living in Sussex County? The farms.

And while some seasonal activities cost money, there are still ways to enjoy them for free or very low cost.

A must-visit:

  • Andersen Farms
This is a hidden gem for families. Their Sparta location includes:
    • A free playground
    • Farm animals like goats and chickens to look at
    • Plenty of space to explore
    • And yes… homemade ice cream made right on the farm 🍦

The farm store is open year-round and offers fresh produce, baked goods, and seasonal fun, making it an easy, low-pressure outing any time of year. (Andersen Farms)

Heaven Hill Farm
A staple in Sussex County, especially in the fall, but don’t overlook it year-round. While their big seasonal festivals are ticketed, you can often stop by the farm market, take in the scenery, and let kids enjoy the open space without committing to a full event day. It’s a great “low-effort outing” option when you just need to get out of the house.

Tranquillity Farms
Known for its peaceful setting and wide-open fields, this is the kind of place where kids can slow down and explore. During certain seasons, you’ll find opportunities for berry picking or visiting the farm stand, but even a simple visit feels like a reset. It’s quiet, local, and perfect for a relaxed morning.

Honorable Mention (a short drive, but worth it): Alstede Farms
If you’re up for a bit of a drive, this is one of the most well-known family farms in North Jersey. While many activities are paid, there are still ways to enjoy the atmosphere, like visiting the farm store, walking the grounds, or grabbing fresh treats. It’s especially fun if you want a slightly more “planned” outing without going all-in on a full farm day.

💡 Mom tip: Even if you grab a scoop of ice cream, it’s still one of the most affordable “treat” outings you can do.

Why Free Activities Matter (Especially With Little Kids)

Here’s the truth, kids don’t need expensive outings.

They want:

  • Time outside
  • Space to move
  • Your attention (even if it’s while holding coffee)

Some of the best days look like:

  • A simple park morning
  • A short nature walk
  • Watching goats at a farm
  • Sitting at story time while someone else entertains them

These are the moments that actually stick.
