Tips and Tricks for a Successful Newborn Photo Session at Home

Welcoming a newborn into your family is a moment you’ll want to cherish forever, and capturing those first precious days with an at-home newborn photo session can help preserve those memories. While professional photographers can work their magic in the studio, an at-home session offers the comfort and familiarity of your space, resulting in intimate, personalized images. Here are some tips and tricks to ensure your newborn photo session at home goes smoothly and produces beautiful results.

1. Timing is Key

Newborns are often most peaceful and easy to work with within the first two weeks of life. During this window, they are more likely to stay asleep longer, allowing for those sleepy snuggly poses that everyone loves. Aim to schedule the session during a time when your baby is usually calm or napping. Mornings tend to work best, as babies are often more settled after their first feeding.

2. Create the Right Environment

Before the session starts, set up a cozy, warm environment. Newborns are sensitive to changes in temperature, so keeping the room slightly warmer than usual (around 75-80°F) will help your baby stay comfortable and relaxed.

3. Use Natural Light

Lighting is one of the most important elements in photography, and natural light can create soft, flattering images of your newborn. Choose a room with large windows, and aim to take photos during the day when the light is diffused and even. I will use available light near a window when possible. All homes do not have enough light to create the bright and beautiful newborn images I am known for. In those cases I will use a flash – or an in studio session may be best.

4. Keep it Simple

For a successful newborn photo session at home, simplicity is key. I don’t use fancy props or extras. Just baby in your arms, in the crib, or a simple moses basket work best for my natural style. I stick to neutral tones and soft textures that highlight baby rather than distract from their features. Simple outfits, swaddle blankets, and minimal props like a basket or small pillow can add just the right touch.

5. Candid Moments

While posed newborn photos are beautiful, don’t forget to capture candid, everyday moments that showcase the love and connection between you and your baby. Whether it’s the way your baby sleeps, their tiny fingers wrapped around yours, or a tender moment during feeding, these real-life moments will make for some of the most meaningful images in the collection. Parents, siblings, and even pets can be included for family-style shots that capture the essence of your new family dynamic.

6. Be Patient and Flexible

Newborns are unpredictable, and not everything will go as planned. Be prepared for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and soothing sessions between shots. The key to a successful session is staying patient and flexible. Allow time for your baby to settle into different positions naturally, and don’t be discouraged if things take longer than expected. The more relaxed you are, the easier it will be to get the photos you are dreaming of.

7. Focus on the Details

Some of the most cherished photos are the close-up shots that capture the tiny details of your baby—those little toes, tiny fingers, and chubby cheeks that won’t stay little for long. I make sure to take some close-up shots of these features.

8. Stay Safe

Above all, safety is my top priority during every newborn photo session. I will always have someone close by baby just in case – and pose using the bed, the crib or a basket on the floor – especially with siblings involved.

9. Take Breaks

Newborns are sensitive to over-stimulation, so it’s important to take breaks throughout the session. Allow your baby time to rest, feed, or be changed if necessary. This will also help keep them calm and happy, making for better photos and a smoother overall experience.

10. Don’t Forget the Nursery details.

One of the perks of an at-home newborn session is the ability to incorporate your homes decor that you have worked so hard to make your own. The nursery can provide a beautifully personal backdrop for photos. Take a few shots of your baby in their crib, on the rocking chair, or swaddled in a special blanket. These photos not only capture your newborn but also the space you’ve lovingly prepared for them.

Conclusion

A newborn photo session at home offers a unique opportunity to capture your baby’s first days in the comfort of your own space. With a bit of preparation, patience, and creativity, you can create beautiful, timeless photos that will remind you of these special moments for years to come. By focusing on natural light, keeping the session simple, and being flexible, you’ll be able to document those precious early days with stunning results. Most importantly, enjoy the process, and let the beauty of your newborn shine through each and every shot!

Feed that baby!

Full tummies make for happy, content, and sleepy babies! Start feeding 20-30 minutes before I’m scheduled to arrive. I will happily wait for you to finish up while I look around for the best spots to shoot and get situated. I am in no rush! I schedule plenty of time to relax, chat, and care for your little babe during our time together.
